The Kirkwood-Webster Groves Branch  ranked sixth in the nation in total giving to the AAUW Public Policy Fund! Some of the K-WG AAUW members and friends who walked with the League of Women Voters Sept. 6, 2008, to commemorate the women's suffrage march of 1916 and encourage voter registration.

American Association of University Women  (AAUW), founded in 1881, is an organization of almost 100,000 members, open to graduates who hold the associate, baccalaureate, or higher degree from a qualified college or university. The Kirkwood–Webster Groves branch, founded in 1971, is one of six branches in the St. Louis area.

Community Involvement
K-WG Branch works in our community:

  • We present a Math and Science Award to a senior girl at Kirkwood and Webster Groves High Schools.
  • We participate in Macy's Shop for a Cause.
  • We host monthly activities with informative speakers.
  • Our study groups engage in lively discussion and lifelong learning.
  • We participate in special events such as Lobby Day and Women's Equality Day.
  • We sell delicious pecans each fall to support women's graduate fellowships, legal advocacy, and branch activities (contact Carol for information).

Where We Meet
Our "home base" is the Oak Bend Branch of the St. Louis County Library, 842 S. Holmes, usually on the second Thursday (note change this year!) of the month, but meetings and activities may take place on varying dates and at other facilities.

Most of our events are conveniently scheduled for working women.

Facilities for general activities are handicapped accessible. The public is welcome to attend, and our events are free except for some dinner events. Contact Kay or Lynne for program information.

Study and Interest Groups

  • Evening Book Group meets the third Monday of the month, 7 p.m. at St. Louis Bread Company, Manchester Road and Woodlawn. Members who want to eat dinner before should meet at 6:30 and the book discussion starts at 7:00 pm. If you have any questions you can email kicmeyer@yahoo.com or call 314-962-7487.
  • Adelante Diversity Book Club (meets fourth Thursdays at 1:30 p.m.). Contact Teri for further information.
  • Downtown Lunch Group (meets at various restaurants, third Tuesday at 11:45 a.m.). Contact Jean for reservations.

September

September 8 (Thursday)—Our fall kickoff! Potluck dinner (Latin American theme) 6:30 p.m. Jane Robert and Dr. Deb Brenegan discuss "AAUW's Trip to Cuba," 7:30 p.m. Brentwood Community Center, 2505 S. Brentwood Blvd.

 

October

October 13 (Thursday)—Peggy Cochran, past MNEA Executive Director, speaks on "Learning About Women's Issues—Growing up in Missouri." 6:30 p.m., Oak Bend Branch Library, 842 S. Holmes.

November

November 10 (Thursday)—Dana Vouga speaks on "Helping You Get Your Ducks in a Row," a discussion of trusts, living wills, legal documents, etc. 6:30 p.m., Oak Bend Branch Library, 842 S. Holmes.

December December 8 (Thursday)—Holiday event: shopping beginning at 6 p.m. at the Kirkwood store of Plowsharing Crafts, and dinner together afterward, restaurant TBA. Find unique fair-trade gifts from all over the world and enjoy our holiday get-together!

January

January 6 (Friday)—"New Horizons in Space" program 7-9 p.m. at Selvidge Middle School, 235 New Ballwin Rd., Ballwin, hosted by Chris Nobbe. Contact Kay for carpooling.

 

February

February 9 (Thursday)—State Rep. Stacey Newman presents a legislative update. 6:30 p.m., Oak Bend Branch Library, 842 S. Holmes.

March 24 (Saturday)—St. Louis AAUW Interbranch Council luncheon, Norwood Hills Country Club.

April 12 (Thursday)—Judith Smart discusses the Health Care Plan. 6:30 p.m., Oak Bend Branch Library, 842 S. Holmes.

May 10 (Thursday)—Annual Banquet and Awards Dinner, Sunset 44, Kirkwood.
